Te Waka a Māui

Te Waka a Māui (the vessel of Māui) is a Māori name for the South Island, New Zealand. Some Māori mythology says that it was the vessel which Māui stood on as he hauled up Te Ika-a-Māui (the fish of Māui - North Island).

Alternatively, another name for the South Island is Te Wai Pounamu.
